Fort McHenry DCC Earns Top Honors at CAP National Emergency Services Academy PDF Print E-mail

Andrew Wortman, Deputy Commander for Cadets of Maryland Wing’s Fort McHenry Squadron, was recently recognized as the Distinguished Graduate of the 2010 Ground Team Leader course during a ceremony at the National Emergency Services Academy (NESA). 


Throughout the course 2nd Lt. Wortman demonstrated exceptional leadership, problem solving skills, and an extraordinary aptitude for land navigation and crisis management.  The Ground Team Leader course is the most extensive of NESA’s three Ground Search and Rescue (SAR) School courses.  It is a physically and psychologically demanding 7-day course designed to prepare CAP’s Ground Team Leaders with the skills needed to safely and effectively manage Ground SAR teams operating in diverse and often hostile environments.  CAP’s Ground SAR teams are comprised of both adult and cadet volunteers that perform missing aircraft, missing person, disaster response, and other emergency services at the request of federal, state and local agencies.

The event, which was sponsored by the Honor Flight Network, was attended by the Fort McHenry Composite Squadron’s Captain Larry Moore (also a Technical Sergeant in the USAF), Second Lieutenant Jake Kellogg and Cadet/Airman Malcolm Scott.

The event, which was organized by Captain Sherry McManus and Captain Larry Moore, was attended by the following distinguished guests:

- Commander of the Maryland Wing, Colonel John Knowles, CAP

- Commander of Maryland Wing's Group II, Lieutenant Colonel Bill Parris, CAP

- Chief of Special Sources Intelligence Integration for Detachment 1 of the 7th Intelligence Squadron, Captain John Dyson, USAF

- Officer in Charge of Technical Operations and Flight Commander for Detachment 1 of the 7th Intelligence Squadron, Captain Kenneth Mercer Jr., USAF

Fort McHenry Squadron Marches in Arbutus Independence Day Parade PDF Print E-mail

From Left: SM Ping Lai, SM Tony Moe, C/Amn Malcolm Scott, C/Amn Bronte Goldsmith and C/Amn Timothy Jacobs pose in front of the CAP jetARBUTUS, Maryland – On Saturday, 03 July 2010, eleven members from the Civil Air Patrol’s Maryland Wing participated in the annual Arbutus Independence Day Parade held in Arbutus, Maryland.

 

The day began when a flight of United States Air Force A-10 Thunderbolts roared overhead to signal the start of the parade. The eleven members of the Maryland Wing joined color guard teams, church groups, local fire departments, cheer leaders and numerous other participants in a convey which spanned across Arbutus and passed up to 5,000 spectators.

Fort McHenry Cadets Achieve Liftoff PDF Print E-mail

Cadet Scott's rocket at the exact moment of launch with Cadet Jacobs waiting in the background to measure the rocket's altitudeFORT MEADE, Md - On Saturday, 26 June 2010, two cadets from the Fort McHenry Composite Squadron successfully completed a major milestone towards their rocketry badge. Cadet Timothy Jacobs and Cadet/Airman Malcolm Scott joined Second Lieutenant Josh Neel, Captain Ki von der Linden, Captain Donald Ells and Captain Larry Moore for an afternoon of rocketry at the parade field on Fort George G. Meade, Maryland. The event, which was made possible by grant funding from the Fort Meade Enlisted Spouses Club, was publicized on the ESC website. This drew a crowd of approximately 30 spectators as well as four members of the ESC and their families. A camera crew from the Fort Meade Public Affairs "Meade TV" was even on hand to record the event.
